June 10, 2016: Karen Kay Shaeffer has died at the Pickering House on Friday after a long battle. Facebook webpage (more).

LANCASTER: Karen, 74, passed away on Friday, June 10, 2016.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Pete Hoffmannbeck; granddaughters, Caitlin (Trey) Smith and Tasha Hoffmannbeck; great-grandson, Reilly Smith; sister, Warna (Bob) Slagle; nieces; nephews; and special caregiver friends, Dixie Byers and Cindy Harlan.

Karen was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Shaeffer, Sr.; son, James F. Shaeffer, Jr.; father, Fred DeLong; mother, Vivian Poling; and grandparents, Carrie and Vernon Lynn.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday at the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 405 N. Columbus St, Lancaster, Ohio 43130 with Pastor Mark Barbee officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Baltimore. Friends may visit from 9:30 to 11:00 AM Tuesday at the funeral home.

May 30, 2016: Pat Woodward Gilmore has died after a long battle with Alzheimer's (more)

Pat passed on at the Bickford Assisted Living and Memory Care after a long battle.

She is survived by her husband, of 55 years, John of Lancaster; children, H. Michael (Jill) and Steven (Cindy), grandchildren, Spencer, Harrison, Alec, Amelia and Anna Gilmore; mother, Olive Woodyard of Bickford Assisted living; sister, Betsy Fridley of Salt Springs, Florida; several nieces and nephews.

The Gilmore Family wishes to thank the employees and volunteers of FairHoPe Hospice and the staff of the Bickford Assisted Living and Memory Care for the loving care they gave Pat.

Pat was preceded in death by her father, O. Wayne Woodyard and sister, Marty Woodyard Smith.

She was a 52 year member of the First Presbyterian Church, a deacon and later ordained as an elder. Pat also served in various leadership positions in the church among which she was chairwoman of the 2000 Capital Campaign. She was a former member of the Fairfield Medical Center Board of Directors, active in Lancaster Arts and Civic Clubs, OSU Alumni Association, Hospital Twig 17 and a 4-H Leader. 

Pat served as Director of Fairfield Metropolitan Housing Authority for 20 years and taught at East Elementary School early in her career. She was a 1963 Cum Laude graduate from The Ohio State University and a 50 plus year member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.

Friends visited on June 2, 2016 at the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY. Caring Cremation® has taken place. A private graveside was held at Forest Rose Cemetery with Dr. Richard Riedel officiating.

January 19, 2016: Howard Earl Klinker, Jr. known locally as Jack, died in Lancaster, Sunday, after a long battle with cancer.

Jack was born 6 April, 1941 in Lancaster to the late Howard and Mary (Beery) Klinker. His Christian education began with his parents and grandparents and at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lancaster; continued at Capital University where he graduated in 1963; and was further continued at First United Methodist Churches in Kalamazoo, MI. and Lancaster, Ohio.

A 1967 Pharmacy graduate of The Ohio State University and a local Mason.
Jack was also a serious Ohio State football fan.

Survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara Jeanne (Brown); and daughters, Elizabeth Ann (Brian) Peck and Suzanne Lynn (Arthur) Owens; as well as favorite granddaughter, Taylor Nicole; and grandsons, Logan Douglas and Nicholas Howard. Also a favorite sister, Corinne Klinker; brothers, Dick and Dwight; and favorite nephew, Eric; and nieces, Stephanie, Heather and Cheryl. 

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, January 20th, 2016 at the Halteman-Fett & Dyer Funeral Home with Pastor Cheryl Foulk officiating. Burial will be Maple Grove Cemetery, Lancaster, Ohio. Friends may call 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.

September 25, 2015: Pat Congrove Mader has died.

Tillie has just advised that Pat Congrove has passed on after battling Alzheimer's disease.

Pat was born on May 16, 1941, in Lancaster, Ohio, in the home of her maternal grandmother, Ethel Hiestand. She was the oldest of four children, three girls and a boy. Sisters: Kathy and Robin; and brother, Bill. She was given the nickname, "Peppermint Patty." She graduated from Lancaster High School in the Class of 1959, and lived in several locations of the country throughout her life; such as, Kansas City, MO; Decatur, IL; Norfolk, VA; San Diego, CA; Beaufort, GA, Melbourne, FL; and Edgewood, MD.

Pat held a variety of jobs throughout her life, reflecting her strength, aptitude, determination, flexibility and ability to adapt to diversity. Her jobs included working many years at Anchor Hocking Glass Corp, Diamond Power/Mirror Insulation; GlassFloss; as well as, child care. She was a member of Sixth Avenue United Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 3:30 PM at the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME, Lancaster. Friends and family may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 1:30PM until the time of service. Caring Cremation™ has taken place, with Pat's earthly remains to be sprinkled at various special locations of request, at a later date.

June 13, 2015: Bonnie Carolyn Shaver Clark has passed on.

Bonnie Clark was born February 22, 1941 to Beulah and Maurice "Jay" Shaver. Little sister to Patricia Louise (Patty Kern) and Lawrence Paul Shaver, Bonnie graduated in 1959 from Lancaster High School. She went on to study education at Ohio University - Athens and graduated in 1963 with a degree in Latin and English. A month later in June of 1963, Bonnie married David D. Clark of Shaker Heights, in the Galbreath Chapel on Ohio University's College Green.

In true fashion to how she lived her life, Mrs. Clark donated her body to Ohio University Heritage in Athens Ohio, for research. She insisted on no funeral. The family invites those whose lives have been touched by Bonnie, to join us at the Lancaster Country Club on Friday, June 19 between 5 and 7 pm. 

A scholarship is being set up in Bonnie's memory, and it will benefit graduates of Lancaster High School. Donations can be made out to "The Giving Tree Scholarship Fund", and sent to the family or deposited directly at Fairfield National Bank in Lancaster.

March 29, 2015: Rev. Philip M. Hazelton has passed away.

Joe Clark reports that Phil Hazelton died suddenly and peacefully on Friday evening March 27th at home while sitting in his favorite chair watching the NCAA Basketball Tournament on TV with his wife, Judy.

Funeral arrangements are as follows:

Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Monday and 1-4 p.m. Tuesday at SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 6699 North High St, (1/2 Mile South of I- 270). Memorial Service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at Worthington Presbyterian Church, 773 High Street, Worthington.

March 5, 2015: Raymond F. "Ray" Wolshire has passed away.

Tillie reports that Ray Wolshire, age 74, died on Thursday, March 5, 2015 at Fairfield Medical Center. Ray was born April 28, 1940 in Lancaster, son of the late Carl F. and Adelene A. (Sterling) Wolshire. 

He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, a graduate of the Class of 1959 of Lancaster High School, and was retired from the Iron Workers Local Union 172. Ray was also a US Army veteran and a member the American Legion Post 11. He greatly enjoyed the outdoors in many ways including hunting, fishing and golf.

Ray is preceded in death by his parents; son David M. Wolshire; sister Mary M. (Wolshire) Pollock. He is survived by his wife, Pattie J. (Dittoe) Wolshire; daughters, Lisa (Brad) Bussert of Amanda and Trisha (Tom) Wynn of Cincinnati; son, Carl (Linda) Wolshire of Lancaster; grandchildren, Courtney and Emma Bussert, David, Jack and Evie Wolshire, and Trenton, Ty and Trey Wynn; sister, Lois (Jim) Fox of Lancaster; brother Mike (Anita) Wolshire of Lancaster; brother-in-law Norm Pollock of Zanesville; several nieces and nephews.

January 26, 2015: Nancy (Schulz) McLaughlin has passed away.

There will be a gathering in Evergreen, CO on March 28, 2015 to celebrate the life of Nancy McLaughlin. Nancy's true home was in the mountains and it is only fitting that we take a moment to remember her there -- in a mountain bar! You know she would love it! It won't be formal but it will be a chance for those who loved her to meet up and share stories -- and, of course, make a toast to her journey.

So please come, if you can, to the Little Bear in downtown Evergreen CO at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday March 28 and bring your best story (ies) to share with the group.

We hope you can make it but understand if distance makes it hard. If you could please respond in a private message so we can get a rough number that would be great. Also if you could please pass the word to others for whom we do not have contact information that would be much appreciated.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado. I'm so sad to report that our dear friend, Nancy McLaughlin, passed away yesterday. She has struggled with dementia for the past 5 years and has been living in a care center in Colorado Springs where she died of a heart attack.

She was a key person in my youth and young adulthood. She was a wonderful friend and taught me so many things about life, loving, and being a human being. She was influential in my pursuing teaching as a profession, even after practicing law for a number of years. She affected so many lives and my children. I pray for her peace with our Creator.

Nancy was a graduate of Lancaster High School, Class of 1959. She graduated from The Ohio Sate University and received a degree in education spending her life teaching and counseling students of middle schools and high schools in the Denver and Santa Fe areas.

There will be a Memorial Service, Saturday morning, February 28th at Elmbrook Church, which is in Brookfield, Wisconsin.

June 3, 2014: Barbara (Funk) Muck Alexander has passed away.

PELHAM, Alabama: Our Barbara Funk has lost her long battle with cancer June 3, 2014, at her daughter's home in Pelham, Al.

She was born April 14, 1941 in Circleville, Ohio. She was a graduate of Lancaster High School, class of 1959. She attended the University of Cincinnati, and received a degree in Radiology. She worked as an x-ray technician at various medical facilities throughout her career.

She was a member of Shades Mountain Independent Church in Hoover, Alabama. She enjoyed singing, and was involved in Unity Singers and other choirs for many years. She was a dedicated mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She had a thirst for knowledge, and was an avid reader. She was fun-loving, creative, and witty. She will be greatly missed.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Betty Funk, and her son, Daniel Muck. She is survived by her children: Lisa Muck (David) Squires, Brian (Bobbi) Muck, Patrick (Leslie) Muck, Joseph (Mindy) Muck, Judy Muck (Michael) Adair, and Jessica Alexander (Daniel) Hawkins; 26 grandchildren; and sisters: Judy (Richard) Swisher and Robin (Clifford) Snoke.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Shades Mountain Independent Church in Hoover, Alabama on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at noon, and visitation at 11:00 a.m.

November 25, 2013: Richard E. Hommelhas passed away.

LANCASTER: Richard E. Hommel, 71, of Lancaster, passed away Monday, November 25, 2013 at his home with loved ones by his side. Richard was born on December 1, 1941 to the late Everett and Mary Gwen Hommel. He worked at Lancaster Hardware for several years then went to work as a Cab Company Dispatcher which he retired from. 

Richard is survived by daughter, Shonda Lee Hommel; son, Everett Richard (Katherine) Hommel; brothers, Thomas (Sharon) Hommel of Lancaster and Charles (Barb) Hommel of Las Vegas; sister, Betty (Max) Wright of Kentucky. 

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his wife Kathy Dillon Hommel and infant daughter Tonya Marie. 

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 30 at 11:00 AM at the SHERIDAN FUNERAL HOME with Rev. Roy Maple officiating. Burial to follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens. Family will receive friends on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of service.

October 22, 2013: Diane Schaeffer Hillyard has passed away.

LANCASTER: Diane was born on May 18, 1941 in Lancaster to the late Howard and Kathryn (Boner) Schaefer. Diane retired from New Horizons Youth and Family Center after 26 years in 2012. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Diane cherished spending time with her grandchildren, enjoyed music and was an avid Buckeye fan.

Diane is survived by daughters Teresa Hillyard of Lancaster, Lisa (Paul) Azbell of Lancaster, Kelly (Jimmie) Croy of Pleasantville; grandchildren Rachel Azbell, Jenna Azbell, Alec Carpenter; step grandchildren Chelzie, Cassie, Brandon, Trevor, Kaylie; sisters Judy (OK) Schurtz of Lancaster, Sandy (Bob) Roberts of Lancaster. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Donald E. Hillyard, her parents and brother Rodney Schaefer.

December 9, 2012: Nancy Eleanore McKinstry has passed away.

KISSIMMEE, FL: Nancy McKinstry Sterzinar was born October 15, 1941, in Zanesville, Ohio and passed away on November 24, 2012 in Kissimmee, Florida after a long battle with Alzheimers.

Preceded in death by her daughter, Carrie Engle; parents, Frances & Richard McKinstry; brother, William McKinstry.

Nancy is survived by her beloved husband, James Sterzinar of Kissimmee FL; daughter, Laura Engle; & grandsons, Jacob, Austin & Isaac of Beavercreek, OH; brother & sister-in-law, Rick & Lacey McKinstry of Springfield, OH; niece, Caitlin McKinstry of Cordova, AL; nephew, Matthew McKinstry of Washington, D.C.

Nancy graduated from Lancaster High School in 1959, from The Ohio State University in 1965 and earned a Master's degree from WSU in 1980. She lived and taught in Lancaster, OH, GA, MD, CA, UT, and MI, but spent 20+ years at Northridge Elementary School and Kenton Ridge High School in Springfield, OH.

Nancy was an active, fun-loving person who was happiest biking, swimming, or playing cards. She always had a smile on her face and never hesitated to help someone in need.

A Memorial Service and celebration of Nancy's life will be held on Saturday, December 15th at 10:00am, Beavercreek Church of the Nazarene, Fireside Room, 1850 Fairfield Road, Beavercreek, Ohio, 45432.

August 11, 2012: Joe goes home from the hospital.

LANCASTER: From Becky Clark: "Hi All! A big thank you for all your emails, messages, prayers and support during Joe's recent surgery.  He is home as of today and doing just wonderful!  Very little pain.  I am sure he will appreciate visits and calls while he is recovering at home for the next few weeks.  Again, please know how much we both appreciate all your kindness.

August 8, 2012: The Honorable Joseph T. Clark is recovering from triple by-pass surgery yesterday.

COLUMBUS: Becky Clark advised that he is doing well. This morning he was moved from ICU to the step-down unit. Just having some pain but doing well with the pain meds. 

Joe said to tell everyone that he is okay.

April 8, 2012: Sidney Alan George has died.

PLEASANTVILLE: Sidney Alan George, of Pleasantville, died Sunday, April 8, 2012 at Fairfield Medical Center. He was born in Star Township, Hocking County Ohio, July 4, 1941 to the late Harry George and Golden Louella (Kisor) George.

Sidney attended East and South Elementary Schools, graduating from Lancaster High School on June 5, 1959. On June 10, 1959, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He completed boot camp at Great Lakes and was then stationed at Quonset Point Rhode Island. He entered Parachute "A" Rigger School at NAS Toms River, NJ followed by Heavy Attack Squadron Five, Sanford, FL, Parachute Rigger "B" School, also at NAS Toms River, NJ. Later he was stationed at VA12 NAS Jacksonville, FL and ended his duty in August of 1967 at N.W.E.F. Albuquerque, NM.

Sidney served in the Ohio Air National Guard where he was a Staff Sergeant from 1974-1978. He was a past president of the Ohio Steel Workers Union while employed at Mirror Insulation, Lancaster, Ohio. He retired from Dor-Mar Heating and Cooling. He was a member and past Commander of American Legion Post 9, Pleasantville.

He was an antique tractor enthusiast, car and motorcycle buff and an avid reader.

He is survived by four daughters, Cheryl George, Deanna (Dean) Throckmorton, Nannette (Joe Fox) George, Misti (Johnny) Sciacca; seven grandchildren, Dean, Chris and Jessica Throckmorton, Hunter (Greg Pritchard), Jacklyn and Logan Rizer and Landon Sciacca; great grandson, Kamden Pritchard; brother, Virgil (Carolyn) George; and sister, Juanita Lindsey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn (Brown) George; brother, Raynor George; sisters, Helen Poling, Marlene Bollin and Gloria George.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 7 p.m. in the Pleasantville United Methodist Church, 112 Lincoln Avenue, Pleasantville. A time to visit with family will take place from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m.

January 29, 2012: Ruth Ann (Severing) Stoltz has passed away.

JUNCTION CITY: Ruth Ann Stoltz, 70, of Junction City, Ohio, died at 5:45 a.m. Sunday, January 29, 2012 at Fairfield Medical Center. Ruth Ann was born November 10, 1941 in Lancaster, Ohio, the daughter of the late Vince W. and Margaret (Self) Severing. She was a member of the New Lebanon Lutheran Church in Junction City, and was a homemaker. Ruth Ann is survived by three sons, Gary Stoltz, Mark Stoltz, and Mike Stoltz, all of Junction City; a grandson, Chad (Heather) Stoltz of Thornville; a great-grandson, Riley Stoltz; five brothers and two sisters. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.

No calling hours will be observed. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 1, 2012 in New Lebanon Cemetery with Pastor Justin VAN Orman officiating.

December 2, 2011: Larry Wayne McCafferty has died.

BREMEN: Larry Wayne McCafferty, 70, of Bremen, died Friday, December 2, 2011 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital. He was born February 19, 1941 in Bellaire, Ohio the son of Nolen Leroy and Henrietta (Shumaker) McCafferty. Larry retired from General Motors - Columbus in 1999 and was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of the Junction City American Legion Post 376; AMVETS Post 51, Thornville and Fraternal Order of Eagles 2120, Lancaster. He is survived by his children, Jack McCafferty and Barbara (Mike) Sorg; six grandchildren, Britany Danner, Stephanie McCafferty, Dustin Danner, Kory McCafferty, Erik and Emily Sorg; five great- grandchildren; brother, James (Janet) McCafferty; sister, Shelby Snapp; special friends, Barbara and Danny Moyer; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth Byrne McCafferty August 3, 1993; son, Kenneth Danner; brother, Kermit McCafferty; and sisters, Miriam Hansley and Janice Wallace.

Visitation was held Monday, December 5, 2011 at the Morgan Funeral Home, 124 Fort Street, Bremen. Funeral services tookTuesday at the funeral home with Pastor Marsha Ashbaugh officiating. Interment and military honors will follow at West Rushville Cemetery.

September 26, 2011: William "Bill" Lohnes has passed away.

"LANCASTER: William "Bill" Lohnes, age 70, of Lancaster, passed away at his residence on Monday September 26th, 2011. He was an avid Hunter and Buckeye fan. He belonged to the Lancaster VFW, the Lancaster 955 Moose, past president of the Buckeye Moose Legion 192, a Lifetime Member of Ohio Moose Counsel of Higher Degree, he was a member of Angler's Paradise, and a 4H leader for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years Nancy Lohnes of Lancaster; children, Teresa (Mark) Gabriel of Amanda, Melissa (Albert) Taylor of Dayton; grandchildren, Britany (Brian) Armstrong, Brett Bentz, Becca Bentz, and Janie Queen all of Amanda; and great grandchild, Addison Armstrong of Amanda; brothers, Jim Lohnes of Lancaster, Warren (Debbie) Lohnes of Lancaster, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary Lohnes; brother, John Lohnes, and great-granddaughter, Isabella Armstrong.

A service will take place on Saturday at 10:30 AM at the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home in Lancaster, officiated by Reverend David Jackson. Burial will follow the service at Hamburg Cemetery. September 21, 2011: Robert E. "Butch" Graham has died.

"LANCASTER: A sad note from Sharon Murray: Robert E. "Butch" Graham, 70, of Lancaster, died on Wednesday, September 21, 2011, at his home. Butch was a 1959 graduate of Lancaster High School (and a great, but unrealized second baseman), and worked for 36 years in the Anchor Hocking Box Shop. Butch was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2120 and the 40 et 8. He loved bowling, hunting, and fishing. Butch also enjoyed volunteering with the Lancaster Soap Box Derby.

Butch is survived by his loving children, Thomas Graham, Cheryl (Robert) Dilley, and Timothy (Jennifer) Graham; grandchildren, Kaitlin Graham, Dustin (Emileigh) Dilley, Jessica Dilley, Joshua Dilley, Conner Graham, and Stephanie Graham; great grandchildren, Addisyn and Mason; sisters, Barbara (Larry) Arledge, Charlotte (Bob) Linn, and Carla (Butch Primmer) Yantes; aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews; and many friends.

Butch was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. and Mary L. Graham; sister, Patricia Graham; and brother, James L. Graham.

September 18, 2011: Michael D. Campbell recovering from major surgery.

HOUSTON: Hi all (from himself): Revision of October 25, 2011 and Last - See Update at bottom.

Last Tuesday, I was finally scheduled for laparoscopic removal of a pesky gall bladder at St. Luke's Hospital after waiting almost three weeks for a spot in the lineup. However, once the surgeons entered my body, they found that Mr. GB had died some time ago and was now gangrenous. The bag contained one large stone, 4 medium-sized stones, and many small stones, and apparently, the bag had not ruptured. If it had, I may not have survived or would be in big trouble now. They had to do an open cholecystectomy. Fortunately, I was finally able to engage the Chief Surgeon at the Baylor Clinic, who apparently remembered how to do it the hard way. For me, of course, this meant that my recovery time went from 3-4 days to 5-6 weeks. I now have a angled zipper of about 14 inches long across my midsection. I was under anesthesia for about 4 hours, which meant that many of my functions were also put to sleep, e.g., my lungs (one collapsed somewhat on the bottom), my bowels, and my kidneys.

Early recovery is designed to get those functions back, while also dealing with the pain of getting around and of just lying in bed. Aside from puffing on a little air-machine to improve lung function, the key to recovery is to walk as much as possible. Should my temperature rise, the counter was to increase puffing and walking. I soon became a slave to the "vitals nurse." When my oxygen level dropped below 93, she would say "Mr. Campbell, you'll need to get busy on the breathing treatment" (the puffer). When my temperature went up (usually in the middle of the night when I was sleep), the same response... With time over the past few days, my functions began to come back. So, since my functions were all looking good, the doctors released me yesterday around noon after five days in the hospital. I am on antibiotics and pain medicine now and am feeling somewhat better. It is difficult to sleep because of the pain around my middle and of the difficulty in finding a comfortable position. I tried my bed, the couch in my office, and then finally found the big couch in the living room, which was soft enough to give me some relief so I could get some sleep.

Mary, my wife, stayed with me the whole time. There was a pullout bed available in my room that was more comfortable than my hospital bed...go figure. Her presence made my stay tolerable and I am grateful for her putting up with my occasional grumpiness during the 5 days, and for my youngest daughter, Jessica, for talking care of Mary's sister while she was away.

Unfortunately, the redness along the lower right section of the wound began to expand a few days ago so I took a few photos of the site and e-mailed them to my surgeon. He called right back asked me to meet him at the hospital ASAP so they could have a look. This was 8:00 in the evening. I did and they found some infection. They cut out what they could see and gave me new antibiotics. I'm home now. They said that if I had waited until my next appointment, the infection could have penetrated the tissue below the dermal layer causing additional infection problems. We apparently dodged another bullet. The next appointment is on Monday. If the infection is not under control by then, I'll have to check in at St. Luke's again for 4 days or more of IV antibiotics. In the meantime, Mary and I are cleaning and packing the slot where the infection was (now size of a quarter) with antibiotic string and pads twice a day.

So, unless further infection develops, or I fail to keep up my lung functions and develop pneumonia, I may just recover from this bout. The upside to all this is that I have lost almost 35 pounds over the past six weeks. This should help with my lower-back and knee issues, etc., and may even improve my golf swing.

Update (Sept 28th): The Monday meeting with the surgeons went well and the infection is being eliminated. No new activities required. Just pack and dress the slot. Mary is holding up well.

Update (Oct 17th): 5 weeks have now passed since the operation. There is some improvement in the overall stiffness and nagging 2-level pain in my right side. The slot is almost closed so the packing ordeal is almost over. Seems the pain is deep below the slot and to the side. I figure my stump is still complaining. Next doctor's appointment is on Monday and we'll see what they say. Next Tuesday I can begin my exercises, I trust.

Update (October 25th): The doctors have just pronounced me as A-OK. I'm not sure I agree with them but they indicated that all tests are good and that I should not be surprised by the occasional twinge or pain in my side for the next 6 months. They indicated that it will take the nerves in my mid-section time to get re-organized....So, let's assume I'm back to good health. I have resumed my exercise program and it wasn't that difficult.

August 25, 2011: Rebecca Lee (Snyder) Seesholtz has passed away.

LANCASTER: Tillie reports that Becky's daughter Cindy Bennett ask that we help distribute the word that her mother passed away August 25, 2011 at the Fairfield Medical Center. She was born on February 19, 1941 in Logansport, Indiana to the late Daniel and Mary (Hendee) Snyder. Rebecca was a member of the St. Bernadette Church, Olivedale, Bridge Club, and a graduate of Lancaster High School class of 1959.

"Rebecca leaves behind her loving family consisting of her Daughters; Leann Schmelzer of Lancaster, Cynthia (Tom) Bennett of Lancaster; Sons, Gregory (Tonya) Seesholtz of Lancaster, and Larry Seesholtz, II of Thailand; Sister, Bona (Carl) Driver of Zanesville; Grandchildren, Dustin, Jesse, Kendra, Rickey, Shawn, Charity, Ashley, Patrick, Andrew, and Mary; Nieces, Cathy Driver-Bash and Marianne Driver-Friesinger; Nephew, Mark Driver. Rebecca is preceded in death by her Parents; and Son, Patrick Allen Seesholtz.

Becky was an integral part of me through our Girl Scout troop for many years and that continued for many years after. Becky was always an important part of the planning and executing of our class reunions, for which we will always be grateful. Becky was a good friend to many in the Class of '59.

March 24, 2011: Jacqueline Rienschield Headley has departed:

LANCASTER: Jacqueline A. "Jackie" Headley, 70, of Lancaster passed away Wednesday March 23, 2011 at her residence. She was born on June 14, 1940 in Lancaster to the late Kenneth and Bernadette Reinshield. Jackie was a homemaker.

Jackie is survived by her husband of 48 years; children Tammy (Rex) Coleman, Charles Headley II, Julie (Chester) Lamb all of Lancaster; grandchildren Zachary, Natalie, Allison, Chance; loving mother Opal Reinshield; sisters Darlene (Dennis) Miller, Renee (Bill) Gatewood; nieces and nephews. February 6, 2011: Charles Henry DeLong has passed away. Haze reports that Charles "Charlie" DeLong died Sunday, February 6, 2011 at Crestview Nursing Center, Lancaster.

He was born November 2, 1938 in Lancaster, Ohio and lived in Bremen for many years. He was the son of the late Roland Sylvester and Mary (Bruska) DeLong. Charlie graduated from Lancaster High School and retired from Meijer Inc. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Donna Darlene (Darbyshire) DeLong, whom he married December 1, 1960; three daughters, Cheryl (Bill) Miller, Christine DeLong and Carla England; brother, Ted (Carol) DeLong of Florida; sister, Linda (Ken) Cuccio of Lancaster; five grandchildren, Charissa Fox, Tyler Fox, Ben Miller, Michael Miller and Heather (Keith) Karcher; two great-grandchildren, Kameryn and Hayden Karcher; nieces, Simone and Shelly; and nephews, Shawn and Billy.

"FOSTORIA: Susan E. Short, 69, of Fostoria, passed away Sunday morning, January 9, 2011 at Fostoria Community Hospital, Fostoria. She was born August 11, 1941 in Columbus, Ohio to the late Karl and Esther (Thomas) Grove. She married James E. Short on February 17, 1962 in Lancaster, Ohio and he preceded her in death December 11, 2008.

Surviving are her son, James R. Short (Susan Little) of Fostoria; daughters, Deborah Lynn Short and her partner, Diane, Toledo; and Denice Short, Findlay; grandchildren, Joshua James, Matthew Dennis, Amanda, J.J., Brittany, Shaina, and Dustin; brother, David Grove and family, Cincinnati; sister-in-law, Patsy Martin and family; and uncle, Paul Scholl, all of Lancaster; nieces, nephews, and other extended family members including the Thomas and Grove families. She was also preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Raymond E. and Dorothy (Imler) Short; aunt, Loyce Scholl; niece, Kimberly Martin; cousin, JoEllen Scholl; brother-in-law, Ferd Martin; and great-nephew, Drew Robert Martin.

Susan was a proud 1959 graduate of Lancaster High School. She was past president of the Fostoria Emblem Club #213, and a member of the Fostoria Chapter #94 Order of the Eastern Star. Retiring after 30+ years as Lakota school bus driver, Susan enjoyed traveling and spending time with her grandchildren and watching their sports activities. She loved life and was full of joy, always putting others before herself.

August 21, 2010: Paul R. Miller has passed away. Tillie has just advised that Paul R. Miller, 70, of Daytona Beach, Florida, passed away Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at Halifax Health Medical Center Daytona Beach. He was a former Lancaster resident.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Nancy L. (Clark); and his loving daughter, Donna L. Miller of Port Orange, Florida; special cousin, JoAnn Bader of Baltimore, Ohio; and special niece, Jeanna Stover of Jacksonville, Florida; and lots of relatives.

A 1959 graduate of Lancaster High School, Paul served as an MP with the US Army before retiring as a Law Enforcement Officer from the City of Whitehall, Ohio Police Department, where he received the "Outstanding Police Officer of the Year" award.

He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church of Lancaster.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles F. and Mildred L. (Grile) Miller.

Funeral services will be held Monday, 10:30 a.m., August 23, 2010 at the Halteman-Fett & Dyer Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Raddatz officiating. Burial will be at Floral Hills Memory Gardens. He was a member of the Christian Fellowship Church and the Gideons. He worked for the Vernon Company for 35 years. He is survived by his wife, Duon; six children; 22 grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

She was born on June 2, 1941 in Lancaster, a daughter of the late Wilford and Ellen (Kilbarger) Hyme. Marge was a member of St. Bernadette Parish. She fought a brave and courageous battle. Her faith in God prevailed above all. She possessed a great sense of humor and kindness to others through it all. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was a 1959 graduate of Lancaster High School and was retired from Ray O Vac, Big Bear and Heritage Pharmacy.

Marge is survived by her husband of 50 years, Billy E. Foltz; son, William (Bill) Foltz; daughters, Debra Probasco, and Jean (Scott) Bingham; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren all of Lancaster; sisters, Mary Jo (Glen) Hanks of El Reno, OK, Donna (Larry) Yencer of Fort Mill, SC; a brother, Fred (Thresa) Hyme of Lancaster; and many nieces and nephews.

June 1, 2010: Donald E. Hillyard has passed away. Tillie reports that: "Don Hillyard, 70, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 30, 2010 at the Crestview Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing Service.

He was born on August 5, 1939 to the late Ivan and Leanore (Hamburger) Hillyard. Don was a welder at Anchor Hocking Glass for 38 years he also worked at Cyril- Scott Company in Commercial Printing. Donald was a member of the Rushville Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd Degree Mason and also a Shriner. He was a part of the Lancaster Commandry.

Don is survived by wife of 49 years, Diane M. (Schaefer) Hillyard; daughters, Teresa Hillyard of Lancaster, Lisa (Paul) Azbell of Lancaster, and Kelly (Sean) Carpenter of Pleasantville; grandchildren, Rachel Azbell, Jenna Azbell and Alec Carpenter; brother, Gary (Betty) Hillyard of Amanda.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his aunt, Delores Brown.

December 31, 2009: Hazel ("Haze") (Smith) France treated for some heart issues. A note just received from Haze: "Christmas day was very exciting at my house with my son, Frank, his wife Velvet and son Matthew, and my son Todd and his son Jordan. After the dinner, presents and our festivities, my sons took me to the emergency hospital. I was admitted and tests were done. Soon I had two stints and a balloon to open a crushed section of artery. I am home recuperating as of yesterday. So now I am on rest duty with no driving or lifting. Although I am tired, I am working on getting stronger.

December 21, 2009: Jack Klinker is being treated for Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma:

"I need to share with you all that I am receiving chemotherapy for nHL (non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma), a malignant cancer of the blood systems. I was diagnosed in late October and elected to start chemotherapy because it has a 70% success rate for remission. I have had two treatments with my third on December 24th. I receive three medicines to attack the lymphocytes that are out of control. So far it has been good regarding side effects. The only problem for me is that I also will take Prednisone 100 mg per day for five days and I get wired to the point that I do not sleep much. After the next treatment, I go for a CT scan on December 30th to see if there is any improvement within lymph nodes in the abdomen. Six to eight treatments constitutes the normal course for nHL. That means by Spring I will know if it was worth the effort.

October 21, 2009: Keith Jones continues to recover (see Here). Hi all (from Sue, Keith's Sister): "Terry had tried to call Keith yesterday several times, to no avail. He finally called the nurses' station to get an update on Keith, because we had planned to drive down for a visit today. The nurse said that Keith was having anxiety issues because they were discussing moving him out of ICU to a regular room, and Keith didn't think he was ready. So, about 11PM, Terry got a phone call from Keith and he said that "all hell had broken loose". I gather that the surgeon and the cardiologist "got into it" and disagreed about Keith's status. The surgeon was ready to discharge him and the cardiologist said he wasn't ready yet??

Terry said that Keith sounded every bit as bad as he did right out of surgery...very breathy and was even having a hard time just talking. I suppose a lot of that could have been the anxiety though. Terry told him he would call in the morning and see what "plans" had been made and assured him that if he got discharged, that he would come down and pick him up because Keith did not want to go in the Van they provided...he said that was a terrible experience. So, when Terry called down there this morning, the nurse said that they were going to feed him lunch and then they were transferring him to Chillicothe. Terry inquired as to if it was going to be in the Van and she said "No...it will be by medical ambulance".

Thank Goodness for that. But, this all transpired very quickly. Keith is supposed to call when he arrives in Chillicothe, but Terry got the idea that they only plan to keep him there for the weekend and then he will be discharged. UGH. I don't think that he is really ready for that either, especially with him having to go to his unsettled house in McArthur and he has no one to help him or be with him. We are anticipating many trip down that way now to help him out. Not a pretty picture. So, the address that I had "published" for Keith, is no longer accurate. October 13, 2009: Beth (Westenberger) Hoot has passed away. Tillie just sent in the OB:

"BLOOMDALE: Beth A. Hoot, age 68, of Bloomdale, died on Monday, October 12, 2009 at Bridge Hospice Care Center in Findlay. She was born on May 1, 1941 in Lancaster, Ohio to the late Charles L. and D. Evelyn (Fisher) Westenberger. She was a 1959 graduate of Lancaster High School, and a 1963 graduate of The Ohio State University with a Science BA in the college of Arts and Sciences.

She married Kenneth A. Hoot on February 14, 1965 in Lancaster, Ohio, he survives.

Beth was head of the Physical Therapy Department at Wood County Hospital from 1965 to 2006. She as a longtime member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Bowling Green where she was involved in women's circle, dream team, reality team, motor ministry and hospitality ministry. She has helped with the West Millgrove Vol. Fire Department annual fish fry for many years.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Kendra Hoot of Columbus, Cheryl (Andy) Shaeffer of Columbus. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A Celebration of Life Services will be held on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 4:30 p.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 315 South College Drive, Bowling Green, Ohio. Reverend Dale L. Update on Keith from sister Sue:"Terry talked to Keith on the phone on Sunday evening (10/11) and things are starting to look "up" for Keith. After we had been down for our visit on Thursday evening (10/8), Keith hit a "rough" patch and wasn't feeling very well. He became nauseated and vomited a couple times (he had just gotten his first solid food at noon time on Thursday, ate a little, and then did not have any appetite after that) and they discovered he was not "processing" his food. So, they ran a tube down his throat and left that in there until Sunday afternoon and drained about 2 liters of 'fluids' off his stomach. When Terry spoke with him, they had just taken that tube out and he was very dry, and was having a hard time talking, so Terry mostly had to converse with him with yes and no questions. Keith did say that his surgeon told him that he had "turned the corner" as far as the surgery was concerned and he was very pleased with the progress on all that. Keith has had several BMs, and that was the goal. The reports also came back on the lymph nodes biopsy, and he was "clean/clear", so he will not have to have chemotherapy or radiation. Great news. They are still very concerned with his heart problems though, and he has a lot of recovery ahead of him with that. He probably will be in the hospital for at least another couple weeks. October 11, 2009: Keith Jones continues to recover from major surgery. Sue sent a note to Karen Delong Shaeffer: "Thanks for thinking of Keith. We just got home from visiting him this evening. I think he was looking pretty good for all that he has been through. And, he also seems to be in a better frame of mind now. The surgeon happened to come in while we were there and he is happy with his progress, but they are still very concerned with his arrhythmic atrial fibrillation problem. He still has the catheter in his neck and a lot of wires poked into him (however, he says they took a bunch of them off this afternoon, so he thinks that is a positive note) and the machine that monitors his heart rate seemed to be in overdrive... constantly changing and it was very high at times... that's the arrhythmia part I guess. His BP was extremely good the whole time we were there. He has electronic compression stockings on his legs and they were supposed to walk him today, but they are shorthanded and didn't get it done. He also got his first solid food at noon today and he said he ate a little turkey, but couldn't finish anything else and when they brought him supper, he said he had absolutely no appetite and couldn't eat any of that... just drank some milk. The surgeon assured him that was OK and not to push it, but the goal is for a BM and to hope there is no leakage and the "seams" are healing correctly. He says he has very little pain now at the incision site.

October 6, 2009: Keith Jones had major surgery. Jack & Barbara Klinker received a note from Keith's sister, Sue Oehrtman, who indicates that Keith is currently in the VA Hospital in Cincinnati: "He had surgery yesterday. Going in, Keith was in a very negative frame of mind and had the idea that he would not make it. He had a baseball-sized malignant mass in his colon and the doctors took out about a foot of his 'affected' intestine and reconnected the colon. Hopefully, if it heals correctly, he will not require a colostomy bag. Worst case scenario: they would have to go back in and 'install' a bag if it doesn't heal properly.

MRI and CT scans/ultrasounds have shown that the cancer has not metastasized and that he should not require chemotherapy or radiation as a follow-up. However, the cancer is not what has Keith worried. He says he knows how he feels and he is still weak and doesn't feel well most of the time, so he doesn't think his heart was going to endure the surgery and expected to die on the table. I guess that isn't a good way to feel headed for the operating room. So, he phoned late Sunday evening and put in a special request that I notify his classmates via the LHS59.org website and let them know about his situation. So, I'm fulfilling his request. Thanks for attention to this. I will keep you updated on the outcome of his surgery."

Jack and Barbara will advise further news. A few moments later the following message was received from Jack: "Terry indicates that Keith's colon surgery was yesterday at the Cincinnati VA Hospital. I (Terry) called the hospital Monday evening to get a progress report. I was surprised to speak with Keith's surgeon. Apparently, the doctor was in the intensive-care surgery recovery area when I called. The doctor stated that Keith came through the surgery as well as could be expected. He awoke on his own after the surgery.

His heart fared well throughout the surgery, but the doctor said the next 5-7 days remain critical for his cardiac tolerance of this procedure. The tumor was removed and the colon was reattached. Again, 5-7 days to see if the "seams" of the attachment start to heal and that no infection begins. Prior testing showed that the cancer had not spread to the liver or lungs, but only a tumor biopsy will indicate if the lymph nodes are cancer free (a couple more days for these results). If cancer is detected in the nodes, then chemotherapy or radiation will be the next step. We plan on traveling to Cincinnati on Wednesday afternoon to visit Keith. Please continue to keep him in your prayers. - Terry (and Sue)"

September 20, 2009: Ellen (Hinton) Rowley has passed away. Tillie has received word from Eric Rowley that Ellen, his wife of many years, and our valued classmate "went to her reward at 2:02 PM yesterday losing the battle with pancreatic cancer. Her family was with her at the time and she was at home. Hospice made that possible; they are great.

"BRYAN, OH: Ellen Louise Rowley, 68 years, of Lewiston, Michigan, passed away on September 19, 2009 at her residence. She was born on August 9, 1941 in Lancaster, Ohio to Denver and Lorena (Weaver) Hinton.

She married William Eric Rowley on June 25, 1960 in Lancaster, Ohio, and he survives. Ellen has lived in Lewiston for the past 18 months, but had vacationed in Lewiston since 1984. She formerly lived in Montpelier, Ohio.

Ellen was a member of the former Trinity Episcopal Church in Bryan, Ohio. She was also a longstanding member of the Ladies of the Moose in Montpelier, and the Montpelier Eagles Aerie. Ellen loved to play BINGO and any card game, and was a life master at duplicate bridge. She was an avid Morel mushroom hunter and huge Ohio State buckeye football fan. She especially loved to have campfires and make smores with her grandchildren.

Ellen is survived by her husband, Eric; son, William Jeffery (Cheryl) Rowley of Naperville, Illinois; daughters, Cheryl Rowley of Goshen, Indiana and Jill (Jeremy) Clinger of Montpelier, Ohio; grandchildren, Lacey, Sean, Scott, Jake and Jenna; one sister, Lorie (Jerry) Kuyoth of Dublin, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents Denver and Lorena, and one brother, Thomas Hinton.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2009 in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home 206 North Lynn Street, Bryan, Ohio.

September 19, 2009: Ruth (Graves) Stalder has passed away in Carroll. Tillie sent in the Obit:

"Ruth Arlene Graves Stalder, 68, of Carroll, passed away Thursday September 10, 2009 at Rockmill Rehabilitation Center. Ruth was born in Lancaster on August 20, 1941 to the late Arnold and Oma Gregory Graves. Ruth was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Lancaster.

Ruth is survived by her loving husband, Larry Stalder; son, Chris (Sue) Stalder of Willowick Ohio; sister, Deborah Sheets of Lancaster; sisters-in-law, Donna (Melvin) Buckingham of Newark, and Pat (Tom) Garbrecht of Arbor Vitae, WI; she is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant brother, William Graves.

In following the family's wishes, there will be no visitation and a Caring Cremation will take place. A memorial service for Ruth will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 24, 2009 at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 231 East Mulberry Street, Lancaster, Ohio, with Pastor Mark Raddatz officiating. September 7, 2009: Beth (Westenberger) Hoot not feeling so well. Barb Weidner Ike called Beth Westenberger Hoot today and Barb reports that they chatted briefly. Barb says that Beth sounded a little groggy and said that she's forgetful because of her long-term chemotherapy, but she knew who Barb was and remembered that her mom and Ron's mom (Barb's Husband) lived in the same condo complex in Bowling Green in the '80s. Barb told her that we missed her at the Reunion and she said how sorry she was that she couldn't be there to celebrate with us, but that she was just too weak to travel. Barb relayed warm, best wishes from all the '59ers and she seemed pleased that Barb called.

July 22, 2009: Shirley Diane (Sheets) Bell has passed away. Tillie reports that Shirley passed away Saturday July 18, 2009 at the Fairfield Medical Center. She was born on June 26, 1940 to the late Charles Howard and Blanche Pauline (Hite) Sheets. Shirley was a member of the Light House Baptist Church. She worked at K-Mart Distribution Center in Groveport for 15 years. She is survived by husband of 47 years, Lewis V. Bell; daughters, Pam (Ron) Koch of Rockbridge, and Cindy Warner of Lancaster; grandchildren, Jessica Pugh, Brittnee Warner and Brandon Warner; great grandson, Devon Pugh; sister, Charlotte Sheets. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by brother, Larry Sheets. March 18, 2009: Ellen (Hinton) Rowley battling pancreatic cancer. Tillie reports after a phone conversation this afternoon with Eric Rowley, she was saddened to learn that Ellen Hinton Rowley has been battling pancreatic cancer. She would enjoy a card shower from her many friends and classmates. Eric suggests that Ellen has never been a computer person, so cards would suit her better than e-mails, who added that Ellen has foiled the doctor's projection and is now on her determined time.

Ellen and Eric, our thoughts and prayers are with you during these difficult times.

November 14, 2008: Becky Seesholtz having surgery for embedded kidney stones. Update: "Becky's surgery was very successful and she is home 3 days earlier than expected. When the doctor was able to get in there and see all, he was able to do more than he had expected so Becky sounds better than I have heard her for a long time.

Her comment was that the amount of pain had crept upon her so she didn't realize how much there was. We will be happy when the other kidney is done with the same outcome, we pray, and Becky will be back to that big smile and laughter we all remember."

November 13, 2008: Barbara (Funk) Alexander continues with the fight. For additional updates from Barbara (Here). A note from Barbara: "Please send this update to the class. I am living at my daughter's, possibly only for the short term. My treatment plan is one of taking Arimidex to reduce the Estrogen level, and getting an IV, not chemo, but something that strengthens the bone, once a month, the next one on the 20th. I have been ill most of the time since I last wrote you, but seem to be getting stronger with rest, eating well, reading some great books and enjoying being with this family that includes five home-schooled children.

My daughter, the mom of this crowd, will be sending an update after our next visit to the oncologist. This form of cancer is described as breast to bone, the bigger medical term escapes me right now. It is the best of what could be going on for me. The last test, a PET scan, showed some activity in the lymph nodes under the right arm. The biopsy of that area gave us a long awaited answer. It is a terminal form of cancer, but if one of the varied treatment plans works, my life can be extended. The bones affected include the upper arms and legs, the pelvis, ribs, breast bone, and the spine.

I have times of feeling frightened but for the most part continue to keep my pink boxing gloves on, in an effort to fight the good fight. I am walking with a cane and rarely using a walker; an improvement.

Also, Becky Seesholtz is at Cleveland Clinic, and was operated on this morning for multiple, embedded kidney stones. She will have this procedure done on the other kidney in December. Does anyone else have any information about Becky?

October 13, 2008: A Note from Barbara (Funk) Alexander in Memory of Judy Jones Staley:

"I love our memories, and most especially I remember Judy's warmth and sincerity. I want to pass this along to all of you. Thanks to her, I was able to pursue a career as a Radiology Technician. Her dad, Dr. Jones and his partner, Dr. Welsh, were interviewing for a student to begin training at Lancaster Hospital, now Fairfield Medical. I applied and within a couple of days got the news that I had been chosen. I couldn't have known, but Judy, sometime the evening after I interviewed, in a conversation with her dad, put in a good word for me, telling him I would be a good choice for them. Further, Dr. Jones and his partner sent me to the University of Cincinnati to finish my schooling. Having this education enabled me to have a life that would not have been possible for me.

October 8, 2008: Judy (Jones) Staley is in the midst of kidney failure. Judy Magnuson Beal just reported: "Dave called this evening to say Judy is in kidney failure and has been moved to a Hospice facility in Blue Ash. She is heavily medicated for pain so unaware of her surroundings. All her family is arriving to be with her. Ron and I may drive down tomorrow to be there for Dave. We are all devastated by the suddenness and finality of this news. I thought you might pass this on to the guys and anybody else who would want to be informed. She and her family will need our prayers. Thanks!" Hoping for the best but preparing for the worst.

October 8, 2008: Ruth (Graves) Stalder is in nursing home with husband Larry. Karen Delong Shaeffer reports that: "Ruth Graves Stalder is in the same nursing home as her husband, Larry, who had a stroke some years ago losing his speech and is now confined to a wheel chair. Ruth has been going downhill the last few years due to different health problems.

I'll bet Ruth would enjoy a card shower from her classmates as we keep the Stalders in our hearts.

October 2, 2008: Barbara (Funk) Alexander now fighting cancer. Barbara has some bad news to share with class members. Her daughter, Lisa, has provided the following announcement: "The news from the doctor today: breast cancer, which has metastasized to the bone. The breast cancer was not picked up by mammogram, even as recent as 3 weeks ago, so they are going to be doing an MRI next week. They will also be doing a pet scan. The pathologist is going to do some more specific testing to see what kind of breast cancer we're dealing with. Once they know the type, that will determine the treatment.

This was not the news we were hoping for — since we were hoping for no cancer, of course. However, off all the areas of the body that this tumor could have been located, this type can be the most treatable. Mom will be seeing the oncologist again on the 14th of October for the results of the MRI, pet scan, and the more detailed report from the pathologist, and we'll let you know at that time any more information.

Right now, Mom is just trying to get the pain under control working with different doses of pain medication. She's been given something for sleep, so hopefully some rest and some control over the pain will result in some better days ahead. Thanks to all of you for your prayers and support.

September 24, 2008: Barbara (Funk) Alexander having extensive diagnostic testing. Barb Ike reports that our friend and classmate, Barbara Funk (Muck, Alexander) is having some health issues. She's in Alabama with her daughters and their families and is in the process of diagnostic tests so that treatment can be planned and carried out by an oncologist. She sent the following note: "I wanted you to all know that we are in the testing/waiting period. I had gone to a surgeon thinking I needed a hernia surgery and he determined that I needed a CAT scan of the abdomen instead. Those results came back that I have blastic lesions in the pelvis, ribs and spine. They are usually malignant; he referred me to an Oncologist. However, they also can be benign and/or fungal in origin.

I'm to have a second biopsy tomorrow; the first was inconclusive. We will move forward with whatever is necessary according to those test findings." However the tests turn out, Barbara is in a stressful situation and we know she'd appreciate notes or support of encouragement when you have a minute. Please pass the word. September 22, 2008: Susie (Thomas) Hilty also fighting cancer. Susie just sent us the news: "So, now I will share some "not so good news" with the class. I don't want to get morbid about the affliction that has befallen me but I was diagnosed with ovarian/peritoneal cancer in late June. I had surgery to remove all of it that was visible on July 10th. Started chemotherapy on August 11th to blast the hell out of the remaining sneaky little Monsters. I have a #1 surgeon, chemo nurse, husband, family, co-workers at Riverside Hospital and now all of you! I am VERY positive and realistic about the disease and the chances of defeating it. There have been significant inroads made over the past decade through our great medical research network and pharmaceutical companies willing to stick their necks out for the good of all of us who are in this lottery of chance.

So feel free to e-mail me, pray for all in my similar situation, and if you have a spare dime, make a donation to a good cause supporting the research. I plan to see you all at the 50th Reunion, maybe even with hair. September 15, 2008: Sharon (Azbell) Young fighting another round of cancer. A note from Tillie: "It is so humbling to enjoy chatting with people from a long time ago, but then having to share that one of our class has health problems is more than humbling. Sharon Azbell Young has endured the wrath of cancer for many years and is now, again, facing the ugliness of it. Sharon, you are in our hearts and prayers. In this ugly face it was Sharon who made me laugh. She said, "Now we know why we have so many children". She has had to call on all five of hers to help her through these years.

September 16, 2008: Paul R. Miller is recovering. Tillie reports that Paul has had some health problems recently due to a brain tumor and sounded good after 79 days in the hospital. He says that he is feeling very good. Paul retired from the Whitehall, Ohio Police force and then relocated to Daytona Beach, Fl where the family is thoroughly enjoying life for the past 11 years. August 25, 2008: Darrell Nichols is dealing with cancer. Received note from Darrell: "I got my biopsy report today so here is the latest. It is cancer. Of the three stages of growth, it is the earliest stage — superficial. This is good. There are five types of treatment — Transurethral resection — removal of the tumor — This has been done

Intravesical therapy — placement of liquid medication into the bladder. This is what my surgeon is going to do. My doctor seems extremely optimistic — so am I. Will keep you advised of any major changes, and plan to see you all at the 50th Reunion. - Darrell"

August 25, 2008: Judy (Richardson) Finkbone died January 31, 2008 at her home in Cincinnati of a massive heart attack. We send our sympathies to the family.

August 23, 2008: Don and Diane Schaefer-Hillyard are having health problems. One of the Editorial Committee members had a nice chat with classmate Diane Schaefer-Hillyard, who has had some health problems. She also discovered that Don Hillyard, her husband and a classmate, is in an advanced stage of Alzheimer's disease. He is staying at:

August 21, 2008: Darrell Nichols recovering from another hurricane and from surgery. One of our Editorial Committee members called the Nichols to encourage them to come to our Reunion. Here is what Darrell had to say... more or less: "Many thanks for the call. Yes - believe it or not, we are probably going to make it very well. I have to admit that I was completely worthless to help (will explain later), and Ruth and our son from across town did all the work. Ruth and I had put up all of our hurricane shutters on Sunday. and Monday morning. We received no wind damage at all, although the winds did stay low. The only damage that we had was water coming in under the back of the house slab. Doug (our oldest son) came over with a wet vac and picked up somewhere between 65 and 70 gallons of water from our family and laundry rooms. The only time that I have seen it worse was about 6 years ago when our 80 gallon hot water heater busted after we went to bed and it emptied into the same two rooms.

Now — why was I worthless? About 2 P.M. on Monday (the 18th) I had a tumor in my bladder removed, so I am tied to a catheter 24/7, just lying and sitting around. I am supposed to get it out Monday and will then find out the results of the biopsy...

As for our town (Melbourne), depending upon what part of town you are in, the total rainfall is up to 25 inches since sometime mid-day yesterday. Our son had three catfish swimming in his driveway and somewhere in town there was an alligator walking or swimming down a city street. All of our local family did well. The authorities are presently unable to keep track of the number of streets that are flooded and impassable. The college has been closed all week and is going to stay closed tomorrow, so I didn't miss any classes. Of course, the students are one to two classes behind at the start of the semester. That isn't good. I will of course keep you guys informed. - Darrell and Ruth" We hope to see you in 2009, Darrell and Ruth!!!

August 16, 2008: Charles DeLongis not feeling well these days. Tillie Bowers reported after a phone conversation with Charlie's wife on August 16: "Charles has for several years battled heart problems, even after a by-pass operation, and now he is dealing with diabetes also. He is residing at: Crestview Manner Nursing Home, Beck's Knob Rd, Lancaster, OH 43130. Our prayers are with Charles. Let's give him a card shower and let him know we are thinking about him." Our best to Charlie for a quick recovery.

July 27, 2008: Margaret Hyme had aneurysm surgery yesterday. Tillie Bowers reported on Margaret after speaking with Margaret's husband. She is out of ICU and is recovering nicely.

May 26, 2008: Margie (Case) Hale passed away Saturday, May 24, 2008. Gary Bailes just e-mailed: "This brings me to you with a heavy heart. Becky Snyder just told me that we lost Margie Hale yesterday to her battle with brain cancer."

Lancaster Eagle-Gazette Article published May 28, 2008: "Marjorie Case Hale, 67, of Lancaster passed away Saturday, May 24, 2008, at her home, Hale Hollow. She was born Jan. 23, 1941, the daughter of the late Willard A. and Wilma S. Case.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was a local artist and one of the founding members of the Monarch Gallery. She specialized in dried flower botanicals and pen and ink drawing. She was a member of the Fairfield Heritage Association and Olivedale Senior Center.

She is survived by her husband, Alan Hale; five children, Richard (Kristen) Baxter, Lori (Matt Riggle) Leohner, Nathan (Molly) Hale, Brooke (Matt) Loraditch, Nikki (Darrin) Flick. She was a loving grandmother to eight grandchildren, Cody and Kaitlyn Flick, Isak Holt, Allison Hale, Chase and Kylie Loraditch, Hailee Richards and Meredith Leohner; and in-laws, Edward and Elizabeth Hale.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a grandson, Christopher Cruz.

July 10, 2007: E. Eugene "Gene" Bushee passed away Sunday, July 8, 2007:

"Gene was born on July 1, 1941, in Lancaster, to the late Lloyd and Harriett (Lutz) Bushee. Gene retired in 2003 from the U.S. Post Office after 25 years. Afterward, he delivered prescription drugs for Kroger's for 4 years.

Gene was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a member of the Amanda Lions and the Lancaster Pigeon Club. Gene is survived by his loving wife, Ann (Collins) Bushee; children, Shelley (Mark) Randall of Columbus, Jean Ann (Jerry) Lucus of Amanda, Elizabeth (Pat) Bullock of Georgetown, Ky., and Lloyd Bushee of Amanda; grandchildren, Kystle, Amanda, Becky, David, Shawn, Dawson and Delaney; great-granddaughter Kimmy; brother, James (Carole) Bushee of Va., sister, Mary Elizabeth (Joe) Hitt of Va.; brother, Norman (Barbara) Bushee of Arkansas; sister-in-laws, Arlene Boggs, Marion (Dale) Curtis, Laura Griffin and Sara (John) Hadley; brother-in-laws, Tom (Linda) Collins and Steve Collins; numerous nieces and nephews; and lots of special friends. May 27, 2007: Roger and Barbara (Funk) Alexander continue along the road. Barbara brings us up-to-date on Roger's condition and on what she has been doing recently: "I have been more than busy, but I wanted to get an update to the Class concerning Roger. In January, I did move him to Oneonta, a quaint town, reminding me of Delaware. Our married daughter lives there. I know that I told all of you that he refused Chemotherapy; his choice, of course, but one that saddened all of us. He is living in senior housing, working part time and seemingly is recovered. I have only seen him once since January, but we stay in touch by phone.

I will be spending the summer with my daughter, Judy and her family. I look forward to being with them and have lots of plans for the children. Judy and I are taking a cake decorating class. She is finishing her Bachelor's degree online and is a busy single mom. In the fall, I will be moving to Arkansas. That move will enable me to travel and fulfill some of the things I want to do in retirement.

My seven children, their spouses and the nineteen grandchildren are doing so well. I am grateful for that and opportunity that I will have to visit them for longer periods of time.

I have most recently been doing private duty, having just finished my last patient a week ago. The opportunity to do that was nothing I sought out, but when it came my way, I moved with it. I have to be honest to say that I hope not to do that kind of work again.

I hope this summer will be a great one for all the members of our class." Thanks Barb and be sure to tell Roger we all send our best. Many class members have asked if I had heard how you and Roger were doing since your last note of November last year.

March 1, 2007: Eric Rowley had double bypass heart surgery in 2005 and has recovered. Ellen Hinton Rowley (Eric's wife) was pleased with this outcome. She is also very proud of what Eric has done since. Eric just wrote to report that: "Since my last report of surviving heart surgery to the class some good things have happened and I attach local news release (click here). I'll bet "Moose" is rolling over in his grave in disbelief.

February 12, 2007: Judy (Jones) Staley gets a good report from doctor:

"Dear Friends:
I saw my doctor in Columbus today and received an "ok" report; nothing worth treating yet, but the disease is slowly reappearing. I continue to feel great, no symptoms at all.

When the time comes for treatment, it will likely be in Columbus at the James Cancer Center with a couple days in the hospital. The doctor states I will not likely be sick and not lose my hair...somehow that is one of the most awful side effects most women worry about. Shortly after the next series of treatments, I will have to go for a transplant. The current thinking is it is better to transplant early than late if you have my "peculiar" type of CLL. That transplant stuff is more than I wanted to ask about; I will see the transplant surgeon and my doc in late April for "information" only. Guess I'll learn how to use the tape recorder since my anxiety level is sometimes high enough that I can't focus.

I am hoping to avoid the whole situation for as long as possible. At least one thing is in my favor... Medicare will approve all CLL transplants, so hurrah for being old!

January 16, 2007: Bauneta (Bonnie) Raikes took a fall on her deck. Karen DeLong advised Nancy Palmer Goodman recently that Bonnie recently fell on her deck and received a severe concussion. January 9, 2007: Nancy (Schulz) McLaughlin has been released from doctor's care. Nancy Conrad (Evans) just spoke with Nancy who advised that she's happy to be released from the doctor's care and that all is great once again. She's eagerly returning to her home in LaVeta, Colorado tomorrow, to be with her critters and friends. The trip is about a four-hour drive from Denver. The Force is clearly with our Nancy S.

January 7, 2007: Nancy (Schulz) McLaughlin is recovering and feeling better at last. A note of good news from Nancy's long-time friend, Alexis, indicates that Nancy is feeling better and is coming out of the fog of medication and post-surgery stress. She has lost a number of pounds and has to assemble a new set of clothes but is pleased on that account. She is well along the bouncy road of recovery from the operations and is gathering her inner strength that is a major characteristic of being Nancy.

Nancy was overwhelmed with notes, cards, flowers and telephone calls during the difficult periods, concerning which she is very thankful for the show of support and good wishes. She said she hopes to catch up with her responses as soon as possible and wants to thanks all of her friends, especially those in Lancaster for all their good wishes. Way to go Nancy!!!

November 21, 2006: Roger and Barbara Alexander both living their lives. Barbara sent in the following message:

"Happy Thanksgiving to the Class of '59,
We are thankful for Roger's recovery and while he has chosen not to have chemotherapy we are looking forward to his returning to work the first week in December. His health issues include diabetes, which he will be seeing an endocrinologist for soon. He also tore a bicep due to the anemia he experienced during the time before the colon surgery. That injury is almost healed. He is seeing a chiropractor for that.

I continue to do the required things to get my license to teach here and the last time I went to the school board, they assured me that all was in order and the license will be coming soon from Montgomery. I look forward to that, of course.

Roger is moving to north Alabama very soon after Christmas; one of our children lives there and he is excited about being close to she and her family.

Thank all of you for your well wishes. The library, where I use the computer, has been a lifesaver; Roger doesn't have a TV and while that is not an end all, it certainly would have been a welcome diversion. I have been reading in the absence of that and have read all of John Grishom's books, eighteen in all, plus some others.

"Linda M. Moore, 65, of Lancaster, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006 at her residence. She was born May 29, 1941, in Lancaster, to the late James and Treva (Robinson) Moore. Linda was a member of the Victory Hills Church of God. She is survived by her loving family consisting of her daughter, Wendy (Mitchell) Klingler; grandchildren, Amber (Timothy) Rosser and James (Ashley) Waits; great-grandchild Wynter Skye Rosser; sister Judy Lutz; special niece Kelly Rodgers; and many other nieces and nephews.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, James and Treva; and brother James R. Moore.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Sheridan Funeral Home. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Sheridan Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

"Martha Elick passed away after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was a retired teacher from Reynoldsburg City Schools after 30 years' service, and 20 years at French Run Elementary School. Martha was a member of Messiah Lutheran church and served as church organist for many years. She was also a member of the Emmaus community in Reynoldsburg. Martha was born Feb. 26, 1941, to Grover and Esther Elick.

Martha is survived by husband, Walter; children, Jon (Cathy) Schatz of Powell, Susan Bowser and Sarah Schatz of Reynoldsburg; grandson, John A. Bowser II; sister, Juanita Boyd of Marengo; sisters-in-law, Jo Ann Elick of Lancaster and Shirley (Paul) Mouser of London; and brother-in-law George (Joan) Schatz of Hilliard. She is preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Bob and Jack Elick.

I am doing well even though the disease is not gone, at least it isn't very active. No problems with fatigue, weight loss (darn), anemia or pain. What more could anyone ask for at this time?

I am looking forward to Thanksgiving, Christmas, a new baby via Beth in March and a trip to South America in April.

November 1, 2006: Roger and Barbara Alexander both living their lives. Barbara sent in the following message: "Roger is here with me at the library today; he with magazines and I with email and a chance to do a little research online. I am so much better from the run-in with the 'bugs;' coming off the Prednisone seems to be slowing the process down. Today we are going for a picnic lunch and a walk at the park nearby. He has this walking stick that makes me laugh when I see him with it; although he is fragile that 'pole' would be a deterrent to man and or beast! We had a harvest meal last night, celebrating God's blessings to us and the fall. Our present goal is to get our 'chores' and errands done to enable us to have the weekend free.

The site in Roger's abdomen appears almost healed, albeit, a small opening now that drains into a small bandage. He was guarding that a lot and now is able to move around without it being a huge concern for him. Thanks to all of you who continue to be in touch; to Barbara Ike, loved the card......'Heal!' The hound dog represented Roger's attitude the day he opened it. LOL."

October 30, 2006: Roger and Barbara Alexander both recovering but... Barbara sent in the following message: "We are both better today; ran some errands and actually had lunch out. It was not easy for Roger, but it did get us out in the beautiful Fall weather. Trouble is that he is just not bouncing back and has decided not to have chemotherapy, as they were suggesting, because there was a lymph node involved and the bowel wall was compromised. I have suggested to him what lung and liver cancer might be like, as that is usually the destination of tumors from the colon. To no avail, and it is certainly his decision not to have chemotherapy. In a couple of weeks, he may be dismissed from the surgeon. He is planning a move to northern Alabama and I will resume teaching again soon." We all wish that Roger will reconsider but Barbara is correct, it is his life.

October 27, 2006: Roger and Barbara Alexander both recovering now... Barbara sent in a message that we have included below more or less verbatim: "Wanted to mail you an update on Roger. The drain in the 'zipper' as you called it, is out as of today. I decided to see if just letting the wound drain into the bandage would be sufficient. He pulled a muscle getting into the car as we were leaving from a short trip last week. That is still healing. In general, he is doing fine.

On Friday, as I was unpacking the car, I was bitten by something. Within minutes I was very ill, short of breath and knew to get to the firehouse immediately. I had an anaphylactic reaction, got a ride in the ambulance, where I experienced such peace as I listened to the EMT tell the doctor that my blood pressure was dropping even further. I was fast swelling around the head and shoulders and of course my throat was closing. The feeling of peace fit into the nurse's description of "you almost made the trip." It would have been a short one too.... However, I was home by nightfall with medication; I am still ill, but better. Roger and I are two sickies taking care of one another." Who said "when it rains, it pours"? We all wish Roger and Barbara the best through their trying times. Send them a note, it would be appreciated, we are sure.

October 9, 2006: Roger Alexander recovering from surgery. Roger's wife, Barbara, tells us that Roger is having a little delay in the healing process. The doctor had to open his abdomen and each day she has to insert a gauze drain in that "zipper." It is something that happens with abdominal surgery, we were told. He plans to move to northern Alabama, a goal that encourages him to wellness. She said that she was reading Wild at Heart to him and that they were engaged in various activities to keep his mind otherwise occupied. She said that they were loving Sudoku; great for passing time. He will be moving and returning to work in six weeks if he doesn't need Chemo, which will be determined in a few days. We are trying to keep upbeat on this matter but, in the end, it's up to Roger's biology and whether he can withstand this attack on his system. Barbara was in Ohio for a year, but missed the LHS59 Reunion, sadly. She loves the get-togethers that the LHS girls have; didn't miss one of those. She said that during those times she got caught up on all the class members' activities. She thanked everyone for their good wishes and prayers for Roger. I can't tell you how much he appreciated your notes, she said.

September 18, 2006: Roger Alexander is having surgery. Haze advises that Roger Alexander will be having surgery for colon cancer on Tuesday September 17th. His address is 206 4th Ave. SE. Apt. 1A, Childersburg, Alabama, 35944. He would like to hear from you.

August 15, 2006: Judy (Jones) Staley sent in the following note: "I saw my Columbus/James Cancer Center Doctor yesterday. My last CT scan shows the disease is returning somewhat, but he wasn't impressed with the amount of disease and said he would reevaluate after next CT in Oct/Nov. At that time, I may get a drug here in Cincinnati or may be part of either of two investigational trials in Columbus. Right now, I am having no symptoms which is good, so he thinks we shouldn't rock the boat, yet. I'm okay with that. It's amazing how this can frustrate your life." She sent her best to all of you who have been sending notes and messages of encouragement over the past year.

March 15, 2006: Sue Ann (Septer) Shook passed away on March 11, 2006. Lancaster Eagle-Gazette Article published Mar 15, 2006:

"Sue Ann Shook, 65, of Lancaster, Ohio, passed away March 11, 2006, at her residence. Sue was born June 24, 1940, in Lancaster, Ohio, to Harlan and Sylvia Septer. She was a member of the Faith Memorial Church. Surviving are two sons and a cousin. Sue was preceded in death by her parents and a brother. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 17, 2006, at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan, Ohio. Burial will be in the New Fairview Cemetery, Rockbridge, Ohio. February 20, 2006: Sharon (Mowery) Utt has died after a long fight with cancer. Karen Delong Shaeffer sent in the following note:

"Sharon Mowery has passed away from a blood clot (stroke). Her daughter said she had a very peaceful passing and was not in pain and was ready to go (after a good fight with Cancer). Viewing hours will be from 2-4 and 6-8 Tuesday Feb. 21st at Haltmen, Fett and Dyer Funeral Home in Lancaster. Funeral will be Wednesday at 11:00." November 6, 2005: Judy (Jones) Staley sent in the following note to you all: "Apparently, there is a plan to have more chemo at the James Center in Columbus. My oncologist said he wants 0% CLL instead of 5% which will only multiply. In January and February, there is another study starting with the investigational drug; hopefully, it will put me into a remission. The drug is relatively free of side effects, no hair loss and probably some fatigue, but with no other health issues, he thinks I should go for a total remission. I continue to feel great and am planning a trip to Russia in late May... that's my treat to me for doing well.

October 19, 2005: James H. Bowland Obituary follows:

"James H. "Jim" Bowland, 64, of Lancaster, died as the result of injuries from an auto accident on Route 37 just north of Rising Park on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005, at Grant Medical Center in Columbus.

He was retired from Anchor Hocking Glass Corp. and a Vietnam veteran serving in the U.S. Army, SP4, 8th Division Artillery. He was a member of Sixth Avenue United Methodist Church, Assistant District Commissioner of Chief Tarhe District of Boy Scouts, F.O.E. Aries 2120, American Legion Post 11, Loyal Order of Moose 955 and the NRA.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Bowland; daughter, Jo Anna "Jody" (Sean) Ward of Lancaster; son, James "Jamie" (Roxanne) Bowland of Lancaster; four grandchildren: Joseph Rayner, Zane Ward, Morgan Bowland, and Mason Bowland; brother, John H. (Yvonne) Bowland of Lancaster; mother-in-law, Virginia R. Bright of Lancaster; sisters-in-law, Charlotte A. (John) Green of Fla., Dorothy J. Dunn of Bremen, Virginia M. (James) Axe of Bremen, Linda L. (Terry) Eads of Lancaster, Betty J. (John Balthaser) Bright of Lancaster and Sharon K. October 5, 2005: Judy (Jones) Staley sent in the following note to you all: "I saw my oncologist today... still have some residual disease and will require another round of chemo (6 weeks) with another drug....may go to the James Center for one drug or stay in Cincinnati if another drug is recommended. I will see the doctor at the James Center sometime soon and get the next segment decided.

Through all of this, I have felt great, so I am trying to look at the positive side of the whole issue even though I had hoped the results would have been better. Oh well, life remains good and in another few hours, I'll have my emotional state back where it belongs.

"Carole Bender Henderson, 63, died at 4:05 p.m., Saturday, August 27, 2005, in her residence in Bowling Green, KY.

She was born December 19, 1941, at Portsmouth, Ohio and was an artist and owner of Glass & Gold by Carole and Handicrafts by Henderson. She was a member of Newcomers, Gourmet, Hospice and Red Hat Society and was a child advocate for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates of Warren County). She also was a gourmet cook, jeweler and an active tennis and bridge player. She attended Miami of Ohio University and was affiliated with the First Christian Church.

She is survived by two sons, John Henderson of Washington D.C., and Scott Henderson and wife Sarah of Bowling Green, Ky.; two daughters, Marilyn Alexander and husband Todd of Columbus and Valarie Dodson of Lancaster; one brother, Bill Bender of Lancaster; and five grandchildren, Ellen Alexander, Kyle Alexander, Ryan Chapman, Tanner Dodson and Olivia Henderson.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Bender and mother, Dorothy Mae Clark Bender; and husband, Harold Richard Henderson.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at the J. C. Kirby & Son Lovers Lane Chapel.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at the J. C. Kirby & Son Lovers Lane Chapel. Cremation has taken place.

August 28, 2005: Carole (Bender) Henderson has passed away. Tom Hammer sent in the following report: "I'm sorry to report that Carol passed away last night. As many of you know, she fought a valiant fight with cancer for many months. She will be sadly missed by many who considered her a very good friend and a joy to be around. We are so glad she decided to join us at last year's reunion and will remember those fun moments forever!!

August 11, 2005: Judy (Jones) Staley sent in the following note:

"My dear friends:
I have great news! My latest CT scan shows another 50% decrease in the tumors; my oncologist is surprised and pleased. I still have two more series of chemo which will bring me up to mid Sept. What a relief. I asked about how a remission is determined and was told a bone marrow biopsy is next on the agenda.....ouch! I also asked about a large dose of a "silver bullet"; she offers only a small dose, so I will enlist your thoughts and prayers for a good dose of amnesia from the medicine. After all that, I think I will go to the James Cancer Center for the experimental drug. What comes after that is debatable. At least you know I am doing well and feeling great. What a gift!

My daughter Lynn was married last weekend at Ault Park in Cincinnati. The rain stopped at about 2 PM with the wedding at 6:30 PM, the sun was bright and hot and the sky so blue that it was picture perfect. The evening was cool and the sky full of stars. I don't think I have ever seen my daughter any happier. I wonder if I would have appreciated it as much if paragraph #1 had not occurred.

July 10, 2005: Judy (Jones) Staley sent in the following note: "I am feeling great; no problems with the chemo. The week of the July 20th, I will have Round 4 of the treatment, then 3 weeks off again, then another 2 weeks with a 3 week break in the middle. After that, I have to go to Columbus to the James Cancer Center for an experimental drug, then possibly a stem-cell transplant... right now, I am glad for chemo with nothing else.

Maybe I should let everyone know that this disease does not necessarily mean a death sentence. I received more than 100 cards of good wishes, flowers (beautiful and much appreciated), numerous prayer cards, and much more. I didn't know so many people cared! All things together, you have made this more than just tolerable. Thanks to everyone!"

July 1, 2005: Walter "Ben" Noland died today of liver failure. Tillie Bowers McCarty provided the accounting of this sad occurrence. The Lancaster Eagle-Gazette Obituary follows:

"Walter "Ben" Noland, 64, of Beavercreek, Ohio died July 1, 2005, at Dayton VA. He was a Vietnam veteran and in real estate. He is survived by his brother, Philip L. Noland of Lancaster; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Parker and Hattie Noland; and sisters Thelma Albertini and Sarah Strawn.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 8, 2005, at Crestview Mausoleum, Forest Rose Cemetery with the Rev. Robert C. Tussing officiating.

I just heard from the Dr.'s office that I will begin my first radiation treatment tomorrow, Thurs., at 1:00. I am very anxious to get on with things, and see just how successful these treatments will be. They tell me I will have around five weeks of treatments, 5 days a week. March 17, 2005: Carole (Bender) Henderson fell and broke her hip two weeks ago. Tillie Bowers McCarty just talked with Carole's daughter who advised her of Carole's accident. While having this problem tended, doctors also discovered that she has cancer. She will start radical radiation shortly after Easter, but at this time is home recuperating with the aid of a walker. March 4, 2005: Donald Gale Kasburg, 64, of Sahuarita, Ariz., passed away this day. Tillie Bowers McCarty sent in the report: "Don was the son of the late Pete and Edna Kasburg. He was born Feb. 3, 1941 and was a graduate of Lancaster High School, Ohio and worked for Anchor Hocking Glass in Lancaster, Ohio for 20 years before moving to southern Arizona in 1979. He is survived by his wife, Loretta; brother, Jerry (Joanie) Kasburg; daughters, Sherri (Harold) Cunningham and Tina (Mark) Glover; and sons, David and Jesse Kasburg and Ronald, Randy and John Gage. Don also is survived by 20 grandchildren, as well as many good friends of the Class of 1959 and others. A memorial service was held March 12, 2005, in Sahuarita, Ariz. February 25, 2005: Pat A. Ventresca, 63, died December 22, 2004. Jack Klinker said Pat worked for many years as a mold maker at Lancaster Mould. He retired a few years ago.

February 24, 2005: Sharon (Mowery) Utt thanks class for sending prayers. Karen Delong Shaeffer to thank the classmates for sending prayers and cards and words of encouragement to her when they found out about her illness. She told Karen that:

"God is still a God of miracles, the chemo is working, and I would like to thank all the classmates for the flood of cards and letters and prayers I received. I always thought we were the best class and now I know it. Thank all of you for all the support." Way to go, Sharon!

January 17, 2005: Eric Rowley had double bypass surgery during the week of January 17th and is doing very well. Ellen Hinton Rowley (Eric's wife) suggests that anyone wanting to send a happy card, Eric's address is 13221 County Rd. J, Montpelier, Ohio 43543. She is sure he would enjoy them.

January 13, 2005: Ronald B. Prather, 63, of Lancaster, passed away Thursday of an aneurysm of the aorta at his residence. Tillie Bowers McCarty provided the accounting of this sad occurrence. The Lancaster Eagle-Gazette Obituary follows:

"Born Sept. 10, 1941, he was the son of the late W. D. "Bud" and Ethel Seifert Prather. A 1959 graduate of Lancaster High School and a graduate of Columbus Technical College, he retired after 25 years of employment with Anchor Hocking. A member of the American Legion, he enjoyed traveling, working in his yard, computers and collecting trains. He is survived by his brother, Terry (Tammy) Prather of Thurston; sister, Pat Prather of Columbus; nephews, Joshua (Jennifer) Prather and Dan Davis of Thurston; nieces, Rebecca Prather of Thurston and Carla Baughman of Millersport; great-niece, Attison Prather of Thurston; and great-nephews, Daniel Prather of Thurston and Blake Conley of Clarkson University, N.Y. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Halteman-Fett & Dyer Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens, where the Lancaster Veterans Burial Detail will perform military graveside services. January 7, 2005: Dana (McKenna) Williamson, 63, of Rockbridge, passed away Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at her residence according to Karen Delong Shaeffer. Tillie Bowers McCarty provided the details via the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette Obituary follows:

"Dana was born Nov. 27, 1941, in Marietta to the late Homer C. McKenna and Mildred Siley McKenna. She was a 16-year employee of Hordis Bros. of Lancaster and a former employee of Selkirk Metalbestos of Logan. She also was a member of the Ladies of the Moose Auxiliary, Ladies Amvets Auxiliary and the Ladies Eagles Auxiliary. Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Fred S. Williamson. son, Dave (Diane) Williamson; daughters, Holly (Chris) Gompf and Julie (Geoff) Perry, all of Logan; grandchildren, Heidi and Drew Brooks, Stephanie (Joshua) Flanigan, Jacob Turner, Geoffrey Perry Jr., Paul (Brandi Dodson) Williamson, Seanna Williamson and Jerimah and Zakary Gompf; great-grandchildren, Shailynn and Makaleigh Williamson and Sophia Flanigan. Also surviving are her sister; Jimmie Silberzahn of Logan, brothers; Chuck (Barb) McKenna of Columbus, Bob (Connie) McKenna of North Carolina, Jeff (Suzanne) McKenna of Westerville and Jack (Susie) McKenna of Upper Arlington; and sister-in-law, Jeanette Miller of Columbus. Dana was preceded in death by her parents; sister-in-law, Sylvia McKenna; and brothers-in-law; Larry and Robert Williamson and Robert Garlinger. June 27, 2004: Penny (Perry) Gerges has died. Tillie Bowers McCarty, Nancy Palmer Goodman, and Gary Bailes announced by e-mail that Penny died this past Wednesday. Penny requested no public service. Her ashes will be scattered at Alley Park. The Lancaster Eagle-Gazette Obituary follows:

"Penelope "Penny" Gerges, 62, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully at her home in Lancaster early Thursday morning, June 25, 2004. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Perry and Michelle Edwards of Canyon City, Oregon; her father, Clyde Perry of Lancaster; many relatives; and a host of friends, both human and feline. She was preceded in death by her husband, Farouk "Frank;" and mother, June Perry. Cremation has taken place according to her wishes. Frank Smith Funeral Home took care of the cremation. A celebration of her life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 3 at the home of Dave and Karen Warnock, 406 King St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Fairfield County District Library, www.forgotten4-paws.org, or Hospice." March 31, 2003: Joe Conrad reported to Haze France that our Dick Hoffman died on March 28, 2003 at the Fairfield County Medical Center. He worked for Ameritech until his retirement. He is survived by his wife of 42 years (Carol, also a member of our class), and two daughters and a son. Joe said that Dick had emphysema for several years but refused to give up smoking until eight months ago.

July 31, 2002: Barb further reports: "I've spoken with Kay (Kisor) Willison on the phone a couple of times since her surgery and today I got an email from her!! (That's a good sign because her computer is upstairs.) She is so grateful for the cards you've sent and wants me to tell you she's getting better each day. Oh, there are the hassles inherent to being a post-op transplant patient (frequent blood draws, lotsa' medications and doctors' appointments) but overall, she's walking each day for exercise, driving and doing great. July 15, 2002: Barb reports that she "talked to Kay (Kisor) Willison today; she's doing well, the kidney is making what it's supposed to make; the worst of the surgical pain is past and she's looking forward to going home on Wednesday!! July 9, 2002: Barb Weidner Ike reports that "my dear friend and our classmate, Kay (Kisor) Willison, will be having a kidney transplant this Friday, July 12 at OSU. I thought some cards might cheer her up during her recovery phase. Kay's address: 1961 Waterbrook Lane, Columbus, Ohio 43209"

March 23, 2002: Jack Klinker reports that Bonnie (Swisher) Punkar fell about two weeks ago and broke her tibia in the left leg. She has about two more weeks in a cast. Otherwise, her spirits are good, which is typically Bonnie. Send her a note (see Mailing list).

April 26, 2001: Haze reports that Carol (Young) Nester passed away last Saturday, April 21, after a short illness. A caring cremation has taken place but there is a memorial at the First Presbyterian Church today (27th).

April 26, 2001: Haze also reports that Jo Ann (Eisz) Ball had open-heart surgery last week at Mount Carmel West in Columbus. Penny told Haze that her minister said last Sunday she was recovering well. Jo Ann has had two strokes in the past year. Jo Ann's Aunt told Penny that Jo Ann will have to change her life style by exercising more, eating the appropriate food, and working less. She is also diabetic which only complicates her condition. September 13, 2000: Phil reports: "Chuck's sister advised today that Chuck died last night, September 12th or 13th at OSU Hospital of complications arising out of a severe stroke he suffered some days ago. The family is present today at the funeral home. Chuck Allison's funeral will be Monday, 9/18, at the Frank E. Smith Funeral home in Lanc. at 10:30 a.m. Cremation is planned." Joe Clark and David Lybrook report that "Chuck was one of only 5 people who OSU Head Coach, John Cooper, allowed in to observe every practice at OSU for many years. Chuck had tickets to all the football games. John Cooper sent flowers to the funeral home and there was an OSU athletic T-shirt that all the coaches signed as well."

August 30, 2000: Phil visited Chuck again today. "Attending him was a young woman from my church who is an M.D. & Ph.D. in residency in that unit. She told me Chuck's stroke is "massive" and devastating. When I asked if there could be any improvement from his current comatose state, she said almost no chance. So I asked if he would go on and on in this condition and she said the issues now are pneumonia (because he can't sit up, walk, etc.) and nutrition, all of which bodes not well at all." Come on Chuck, fight!

August 17, 2000: Phil Hazelton reports: "Chuck has been moved to intensive care at OSU. The nurse today said he was "stable", but still in the unit. Still unconscious. She's not allowed to tell me much because I'm not family, but you can easily gather that he's taken a bad turn lately." Let's hope Chuck can come back...soon.

August 12, 2000: Chuck Allison is in the critical condition at The Ohio State University Hospital. Rev. Phil Hazelton reports that he has visited him at the hospital twice this past week. Joe Clark informed Phil about it via Chuck's sister, Diane. Chuck is in a stroke-induced coma at present. According to his sister, he has suffered from diabetes and high-blood pressure for a number of years. He went into the hospital for surgery to install a permanent entry for dialysis, and suffered the stroke during the surgery. Phil spent some time with a friend of Chuck's (Chuck now uses the name "Charlie"), a Dr. Murphy who told Phil that Charlie's biggest interest is OSU football. His sister, Diane, is hoping for him to come out of the coma someday. In the meantime, send cards and letters to Charlie % 1019 Doan Hall, OSU Hospital, Columbus, OH 43201. Phil says that he will continue to visit Charlie as often as possible and to provide periodic reports.

July 2, 2000: Eleanor (Root) Schmidt. Barb reports that Eleanor is progressing well. She gets around with only some help from a cane. Keep going Eleanor!!!! At the recent Hall of Fame Dinner in Lancaster, Barb & Eleanor spent quality time together (see Special Event, 2000).

July 2, 2000: Phil has now recovered and is walking good. Way to go Phil!!! He promises to play cards only on rare occasions in the future.

April 28, 2000: Another accident!!! David Sweyer reports that "Phil fell on an ice patch a few days ago (walking home from a card party?) and broke his leg and damaged one of his replaced hips to the extent that the recent replacement had to be replaced." Good words via e-mail and cards would help Phil get through this.

April 12, 2000: Jack reports that JoAnn has recovered enough that she has returned to work. That's great news! Way to go, JoAnn!!

March 7, 2000: JoAnn (Eisz) Ball has had a minor stroke. Jack Klinker reports that "JoAnn suffered a minor stroke on February 27, 2000 and was discharged from the hospital a few days later. She has experienced some paralysis on the left side which may require some therapy to return to normal functions." Send cards and letters to her at home (see Mailing list).

March 6, 2000: Eleanor (Root) Schmidt recent report from Barb: "I've just read all of my previous updates on the class website (now archived), and realized that I probably drove you nuts with the amount of medical detail that I included ! So this will be short and sweet, I promise. We spent 2 days with Ellie and Jack last week. Jack had surgery for prostate cancer in mid-February, which complicated their already difficult situation and added lots of worries and logistical problems. He's doing well now, though, and is headed for a complete recovery. Eleanor continues to get better and better; the skin grafts have nearly healed, she walks around the house without her walker part of the time and "works out" at therapy 3 times a week; her strength, endurance, and flexibility are increasing nicely. Her attitude is positive and she seems totally determined to get back to normal ASAP. By Golly ! I think I may have caught a glimpse of the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel! The kindness and concern of so many friends and acquaintances continue to amaze them both, and they are very grateful for the attention and communication that continues even now. But then, nice people deserve that. Thanks to all of you for being true friends. E-mails are still in order if you find a moment; she checks every day and reads every one, although she admits that she doesn't always have the patience to reply (gahlions@aol.com). January 29, 2000: Ned McGrew died last evening here in Lancaster. Barb Childrey reports that "he had had double knee surgery on Monday the 24th and on Tuesday he had a cardiac arrest. He was on life support all week and on Friday the family decided to remove it and he died last evening. Ned's wife, Ruthanne, is surrounded by her family and loved ones. Their daughter, Korey, is having a hard time. She is only around 22. His funeral will be next week..." Send condolences (see address in Mailing list).

January 16, 2000: Phil Hazelton has undergone hip-replacement surgery at Mt. Carmel E Hospital and is probably home by now. As in the case of Eleanor, he will be having a lot of therapy. Please send cards to his home address: 475 Haymore St., Worthington, OH 43085 or e-mail.

October 22, 1999: Eleanor (Root) Schmidt [was] in serious condition in ICU at Grant Hospital. She fell off the roof of her home (cleaning gutters!!) and suffered multiple fractures and extensive facial trauma. There will be many weeks of hospitalization, more surgery and months of rehabilitation. Barb Ike reports that she believes Grant is the best place for trauma care of this type.
