CURRENT EVENTS

Just like Mr. Coleman's Class

February, 2009

HEY TO THE PURPLE AND GOLDEN'S…

I sit here with a fire roaring in the kitchen fireplace, and only a generator providing electricity for the bare essentials while looking OUT at a gorgeous scene of snow and ice which have the trees draping to the ground, and only the geese are brave enough to come out on the frozen lake. Yep, central Ohio is under the annual January storm that makes living here so interesting, and gives me popsicle toes. Oh well, our next big event will be Spring with its green grass and the re-birth of nature as a background for the calves, colts, and lambs cavorting over the hills. I can't wait for all that!!!

So, in the meantime, let's do some of the indoor activities to get ready for the outdoor fun that is coming… soon I hope.

  1. We need more suggestions for a moniker for us 59'ers that we can use for this current events page. Or, as I am thinking about this, maybe “Current Events” and no name for us is best since that is what we try to share here. Just let us know what you think.

  2. Have you been able to get a lead on one of our classmates from whom we have not heard? I am so grateful to many of our classmates, as well as friends from other classes, who have taken this project to heart and we are finding more of the lost. Please find below more information on some of the found.

  3. Did you remember when hanging your new 2009 calendar to block the dates of August 21 and 22 for the 50th Reunion of the 59'ers?

  4. Have you found any of our classmates who have just started using a computer and need to know about our www.LHS59.org? If you know someone like this, please tell them to go to the e:address or the Editorial Committee page and send a mail to one of the Committee members so we can add their information to the web site, or we can just send them information if they prefer to remain unpublished.

  5. Let's use this time to go to www.LHS59.org as much as possible to see what is new, or identify people in the many pictures we have at /earlyhist.htm, or go to the attic and retrieve your pictures and send them to an Editorial Committee member. If you have a scanner. or know where there is one, just scan the pictures and either attach them to an e:mail or insert them into the mail. If you don't have the availability of all the equipment, please send any pictures to me that you want in the website and I will make copies and return your pictures to you. You can always bring pictures to the Reunion also.

  6. Find below the discussion of AUTOGRAPH PAGES.

  7. The first letter of information about the 50 th Reunion was mailed about two weeks ago, so if you didn't get the letter, please contact Helen Azbell or Karen Schaeffer, or any Editorial Committee member to get one on the way.

  8. Please follow this link www.LHS59.org and find, then explore, all the other LHS classes which are linked to our website.

So, with all these indoor jobs to do,

Let's Have Some FUN !!!!!

Your Secret Current Events Editor

(Hint: She has always been on permanent, super secret, double probation for causing trouble clear back to 1955. Some say even before.)

You guessed it. It's Tillie!!!

From: Tillie (Bowers) McCarty:

Well, I hope Nancy Schulz heard from several who might interline with her for transportation to our 50 th Reunion, but if not this may be a reminder to someone to call. We want to help anyone who wants to get to the Reunion, so let us know how we can assist through this Current Events page.

Since the time is drawing nigh for our great event, we need to try to coordinate transportation for those who need/want it. Nancy Schulz has mentioned that she must drive and not use public transport due to her illness, so she would like to hear from those who might be going close to, or through LaVeta, CO.

All you have to do is go to the Mailing List page and/or the E-Mail List page to find out where people are located and then contact them if you could help through car-pooling or traveling together. Should you need the password to access either of these secure pages, please contact a member of the Editorial Committee /edcom.htm

Tillie - I received a short note from Nancy today.

She said: "Hopefully I'll be okay in a few months. I'm having knee surgery in a week. I also had back surgery last April and am still limping from that. My memory has completely disappeared. Hopefully it'll return."

I think that you have her address but just in case here it is:

Nancy M. Sterzinar
681 Barcelona Dr.
Kissimmee, Fla 34759-3652

I"m going to send her a "Thinking of you card" or something like that, and in a week or so, will follow-up with a "get-well" card. She would probably like cards from all of us.

Darrell"

From Carolyn:

"Subject: Nancy McKinstry Sterzinar

Dear Tillie,

Nancy's husband, James Sterzinar, left me a voice-mail message yesterday stating that Nancy's knee surgery went well, that she was in recovery, & that she would be two weeks in rehabilitation.

I was unable to return his call as the number was blocked.

Warmly,

Carolyn"

To Carolyn and Darrell we owe a real debt of gratitude. The news of Nancy was not what any of us wanted to hear, but at least we are in contact and there is a tomorrow for us. Please take a minute to send Nancy a card since she is again in need of our support.

Just recently we lost Mr. Larry Peterson, a well respected teacher, coach, and friend to many in the class of '59. Below is a note sent by Donna Walton Hochradel, class of '60. Donna, we so appreciate you and the many others from other classes who have been so supportive of the 59'ers over the years.

Carolyn (Meier) Haynes to host Florida 59'ers….

Those who are residing part-time or full-time in Florida are very fortunate since Carolyn has volunteered to coordinate some social activities, and even visit those who are ill or in need of a smiling face.

"Carolyn,

I personally send my best wishes for this project since so many of the 59'ers are in Florida and offer the Current Events and/or Class Comments web pages as a means to communicate if you want. If anyone would like to chat with Carolyn about this project, please refer to the secure address/phone # web pages (after mid-February) because Carolyn is away until then.

Tillie"

NAME THAT KID CONTEST

The LHS59 website is sponsoring a contest that will run through the Reunion August 22, 2009, when all in attendance will have had a chance to identify as many as possible in all of the pictures on the website. Begin with the kids on: /earlyhist.htm

Yes, and there will be a prize for the person who submits the most correct IDs .

So, you will need to submit an easily read page, or two, identifying the picture, and using the terms 'front row', 'second row', etc, and ending with 'back row'. Then ID as many in the photos as you can.

The photos can be found throughout the LHS59 site, but mainly on the Early History page on www.LHS59.org and will be provided at the Reunion for you to a have reference, but remember, this is a CONTEST, so you won't want to share too much information with your classmates.

Since we have several months to get you all the specifics, like the PRIZE, we will just encourage you now to get started with your paper and pencil.

GOOD LUCK to everyone!!!!!

This spot will be reserved each month for a question, or activity, that might have been asked, or assigned, by different teachers we all had, and the questions all come from and 1895 test that was given to pass out of the eighth grade in Kansas.

Mr. Eirick asks:

QUESTION for January: If a load of wheat weighs 3,942 lbs., what is it worth at 50 cts/bushel, deducting 1050 lbs. for tare?

ANSWER:

3,942# - 1,050# = 2,892# / 60# per bushel =

48.2 bu. * 50 cts per bu. = $24.10 for the load.

Mr. Larry Peterson asks:

QUESTION for February……Name and locate the principal trade centers of the U.S (reminder; this is from a test for 8th graders in 1895).

Sure, Sure...

AUTOGRAPH PAGES NEEDED! You will note that we have in the website just two sets of the autograph pages that were in our Mirage, so would like to also have yours. Please scan or copy your autographs to share and send them to one on the Editorial Committee or me if you like. If sending them is not feasible, please feel free to bring them to the Reunion and give them to an Editorial Committee member.

Do YOU have an alternate address such as a winter/summer home? If so, we would love to add that to the secure address pages in the website. Take a peek at what it looks like at /mailinglist.htm and then submit your information to one of the Editorial Committee members.
